Patterns: the same station, the same economy-driven trip to work, the same stressors. Stopping to write a poem–to enter a different life of the mind, writers say–throws off the routine, and tends to reboot the day. For Nechama it was a level of self-awareness, her seeing herself consider writing a poem. She’s a research assistant at the Postcard Collection, formerly an assistant at Art 21.

Surprised by an unexpected
encounter – a little intrigued,
amused, yet hesitant
