This is N.Y

Fulton Street station, 2 train to 72nd Street
It was an honor to meet Phillis, a veteran of the civil rights movement, poet and author of the poem “The Doors of No Return: A Jury of His Peers.” Phillis was beautiful, soft-spoken and spellbinding. She was one of the first blacks to integrate into an all white high school in North Carolina. She came face-to-face with the Klan in 1965. I asked. She was a bit hard of hearing so I had to get close. She said, “I’m a real poet. I’m not sure you want me.” I said, “Oh yes I do.”

My Poem

This is N.Y.
Spontaneity
A stranger ask –
 usually for money
But today
This stranger asked
 for something –
 valuable + free
She asked for
 a part of me –
  I love N.Y!

Phyllis, I really enjoyed this poem, and I’ll look for more of your work. I’m completely indebted to you for your sacrifice. Thank you! 🙂

After your much appreciated comment this morning I just had to drop over and comment on this poem that was featured on your video. I have not been able to get it out of my mind – I just love it. It just seems to ooze with an emotional release that the writer is not alone. A special thanks for posting this one…
